The Courts belong to the people. The people must be involved in the Courts. The Courts must continue to protect the rights of the people and insure that the members of our free society enjoy life liberty and the pursuit of happiness in a safe, healthy, and predictable environment where justice for ALL the people ALL the time is the standard ALL the time.
Human nature demonstrates that people will not always agree on everything. When disputes arise, there must be a peaceful forum in which a just, fair, and reasonable resolution can be achieved. That forum in these United States and in the State of Michigan is the Courts.
The Courts are the third branch of government. Although counted as third, the Courts are the most important branch of government. It is the Courts, which decide whether the laws enacted by the Legislature are constitutionally sound. It is the Courts, which decide if the administration of the laws is performed in a constitutionally sound fashion. The buck stops at the courthouse.
Lady Justice wears a blind fold because justice must be blind to gender, color, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, wealth, and or stature of all who come before the Courts. The Courts are to judge factual scenarios not people. The ruling of the courts look at the role each person played in each factual scenario. Applying the laws to the facts and assigning responsibility in an unbiased, evenhanded fashion is what justice requires.
The judges are elected on the Non-Partisan Ballot, in keeping with the Court’s commitment to apply the laws without regard to personal status or wealth. The Courts belong to the people, all the people of this great state of Michigan. Every citizen should be involved in the judicial process by voting for judges on the Non-Partisan Ballot, and by serving jury duty when qualified, and called to report.
Service on jury duty is the only time when citizens make the governmental decision of the day. Should you want a certain action from the Executive Branch of government, one must write or call, hoping the executive office will see things your way. If an action from the Legislative Branch is what you seek, perhaps you can go to the capital, raise a sign hoping someone will read your position, and enact a law. Serving as a juror each citizen decides, each juror’s voice is heard without an intermediary.
It is through the jury process that the community standard of what is just, equitable, and reasonable is established and upheld. The citizens of Michigan are a community. Every segment of the community should come together as jurors to discuss everyday life events and experiences when performing jury duty. When all members of the community come together to talk with one another, face to face, we discover that we have more in common than that which divides us. A diverse representative jury, day in day out, day after day provides a format for an ongoing dialogue, which builds a more unified, cooperative, informed, community.
The Courts provide for individual participation in a peaceful process through which governmental decisions are made setting community standards for a peaceful co-existence. The laws of the country and this state are founded on the principle that the law must work toward the common good for the common man. Adhering to the principle of respect for legal past precedence allows members of our society to conduct their business and conform their behavior to those standards adopted as reasonable and acceptable.
